Characteristics of coreless cylindrical induction pumps

A. E. Mikel'son - U. A. Saulite - A. Ya. Shkerstena

Abstract
A traveling-field type coreless cylindrical pump consisting a finite inductor surrounding an infinitely long conducting cylinder is considered. It is assumed that the inductor has an infinitely thin winding. The instantaneous end effective values of the radial component of the traveling magnetic field are calculated. Expressions are obtained for the vector potentials of the currents flowing in the individual phases of the inductor winding. The experimental values are in good agreement with computed data, and can thus be used in the calculation and design of coreless cylindrical metallurgical induction pumps for the transport of such corrosive metals as Al and Zn, where ferromagnetic cores are unsuitable.
