Abstract
An intermittent high-frequency magnetic field has newly been developed. In a continuous casting mold with imposition of the magnetic field the meniscus motion of a molten gallium used as the simulator of a molten steel was measured by a laser level sensor. Moreover, a molten tin used as another simulator was continuously cast into the mold with imposition of the magnetic field, and new functions created by the magnetic field were studied from the view point of the control of initial solidification in continuously cast metals. It is found that the surface quality of the continuously cast tin can be drastically improved by use of the magnetic field, i. e. the intermittent high-frequency magnetic field can produce a smooth surface. It is noticed that the surface quality of continuously cast metals depends on the period and the timing of imposing the magnetic field in a cycle of mold oscillations. Tabl. 1, figs 10, refs 7.
