Abstract
The Riga Dynamo facility was built for laboratory reproduction of the continuously running natural process which creates the entire magnetic field of the environment on the Earth, great planets, the Sun, stars and even galaxies. In all of them the field is created by an intense helical movement in large volumes of an electrically conducting fluid. We use a swirling flow of 2 m3 molten sodium to clarify the principal points of the generation process: scaling rules for both dynamo start and saturated generation, magnetic field profiles in both vertical and horizontal directions and its temporary spectrum, deformation of the environmental field during the start of dynamo.
