Longitudinal edge effect in induction-type magnetohydrodynamic machines with an open magnetic conductor, taking account of the discrete nature of the current load

G. Kh. Kirshtein - I. P. Kvasnevskii

Abstract
The article considers the longitudinal edge effect in induction-type magnetohydrodynamic machines with an open magnetic conductor (for example, in three-phase induction pumps). It is shown that a simple model of a stator with a continuous current load does not describe sufficiently accurately the pulsating components of the fields. This model can be made more precise by the addition of point-type conductors at the beginning and the end of the active zone. The efficiencies and forces, calculated on the basis of these two models are compared with data obtained from the calculation of an inductor with a discrete current load. The article gives an example of the use of the refined model for the construction of awindingwith apurely running magnetic field in the gap, over the whole length of the stator.
