Solution of a variational problem involved in building an optimal magnetohydrodynamic generator

Abstract
This paper discusses questions connected with the determination of the form of the channel during the solution of a variational problem involved in the building of a magnetohydrodynamic generator of maximal power in the case where the equations of the one-dimensional approximations are used. It explains the reasons which make it necessary to include in the formulation of the variational problem the conditions for the validity of the one-dimensional equations used and, as a consequence, the reasons for the appearance in the solution of the corresponding sectors of the boundary extremum.
