Axial field distribution in magnetic system of an MHD conduction pump

V. Kh. Vitol

Abstract
The fall-off of the transverse magnetic field component along the duct axis of an MHD conduction pump has been studied experimentally. It was found that the height of pole pieces has little effect on the distribution B(xδ), and the expression derived for apδ = ∞ can be used in practical calculations provided apδ > 3. A taper angle 1/2 a = 15−20° is recommended for a smooth fall-off of the magnetic field. The relative theoretical gap is a function of the taper angle. It was proved experimentally that the assumption of an infinite pole width in the direction normal to the duct axis leads to considerable errors.
