Analysis of the optimum conditions for energy transformation in an MHD generator

Abstract
Variational optimization is considered for the channel of an MHD generator of Faraday type, the optimization being with respect to the gas-dynamic parameters for an arbitrary dependence of the electroconductivity and gas composition on temperature and pressure, with the low parameter being also dependent on the velocity. The problem is reduced to a solution of a system of three ordinary differential equations written in generalized form; the system is shown to give a solution with some interesting features, and it is found that the two-sided turning point is characterized by a continuous transition through M = 1.
