Asymptotic solution of MHD problem for an induction machine, taking into consideration the finite length of the stator

A. M. Samsonov - E. A. Tropp

Abstract
The method of singular perturbations is used for the solution of the complete MHD problem for an induction machine whose stator consists of a dielectric and a winding having anisotropic properties. The effect of the zonal structure of the stator on the nature of flow in the channel and on the efficiency of the machine is illustrated. The monotonic dependence of the efficiency on the flow rate of the metal is elucidated taking into consideration the parameters of the winding; the possibility of optimizing the mode of operation for known parameters is demonstrated. It is found that the secondary flows do not affect the discharge--thrust characteristic of the machine and this result is independent of Hartmann number. The streamlines of the secondary flows are plotted.
