Streams of conducting fluid in a transverse magnetic field

V. V. Gnatyuk - T. A. Gnatyuk - K. E. Dzhaugashtin

Abstract
The results of a theoretical study of an axially symmetric stream of an incompressible conducting fluid propagating in a transverse magnetic field are presented. A solution of the problem is obtained in the framework of a boundary-layer theory using a generalization of an integral method for three-dimensional flows. Laminar and turbulent streams are considered. It is shown that when the field is applied the stream loses the characteristic symmetry of ordinary flow: the size of the stream in the field direction exceeds that in the perpendicular direction. Experimental results on a turbulent liquid-metal stream in a transverse field are also presented. The experimental results are compared with calculations.
