Method for calculating an electromagnetic through

Yu. K. Krumin'

Abstract
A short description is given of earlier known methods for calculating the characteristics of electromagnetic troughs, and the shortcomings of these methods are pointed out. To eliminate these difficulties, it is proposed to introduce into the discussion an equation connecting the mass flow rate of the metal with the forces of hydraulic resistance encountered by the metal in motion in the channel. This equation and the equations describing the electromagnetic processes enter into a unified system consisting of three equations, which makes it possible to assume that three of the parameters characterizing the work of the trough (for example, the thickness of the layer of metal, the mass flow rate, and the capacity or the width of the channel) are unknown, and to determine them as a function of the remaining parameters. It is shown that the conditions at the inlet end of the trough have a very great effect on the mass flow rate. The article introduces the concept of the maximal conditions of the trough, attained only in the case when the metal enters the trough in a sufficient amount. The above-noted system of equations is examined both for maximal working conditions of the trough and for working conditions with underloading.
