Abstract
A model of circulation of liquid metal in a bounded volume due to a nonuniform system of electromagnetic forces is studied. The model consists of a cylindrical vessel 350 mm in diameter filled with tin at a temperature of 250°C. An electromagnetic field is excited by an annular inductor which can be moved along a vertical axis. An original design is described for an apparatus to measure simultaneously the three spatial components of the dynamic pressure. The vertical and radial components of the velocity and magnetic induction are measured. An analysis is made of the variation in the structure of the flow and the size of the circulation zone of the melt at frequencies of 50-2500 Hz. The distributions of the current and of the absolute values of the velocity and magnetic field vectors are shown for the most interesting directions passing through the center of the circulation. A field screening effect is found.
