Unidirectional MHD flows in a strong uniform magnetic field. I. Mo- tion of an infinite cylinder

S. Yu. Molokov

Abstract
We studied a steady flow due to the motion of an infinite cylinder of an arbitrary cross-section placed in an unbounded domain of a conducting fluid in a strong uniform transversal magnetic field. Asymptotic expansions of the fluid velocity, the induced magnetic field and the cylinder drag at large Hartmann numbers have been obtained. It is shown that only in the case of insulating and perfectly conducting cylinders the fluid flow in near wakes is similar to that of a rigid body. If the conductivity of the cylinder is finite, both the velocity and the drag depend on the cross section shape of the cylinder. The computational results for a circular cylinder have been presented.
