Investigation of the behavior of an electrically conducting fluid in a shallow vat with an abrupt expansion exposed to the action of a travelling magnetic field at various magnetic Reynolds numbers

S. B. Dement'ev - K. K. Sipin

Abstract
Some results are presented of a physical simulation, using an In-Ga-Sn alloy, of the hydrodynamic processes occurring in the channel of an MHD gate in the presence of a rectangular velocity profile in the channel. The suppluy current frequency and the magnetic Reynolds number Re_{m} are found to have major influence on the stability of the liquid braking process in the channel. Characteristic flow regimes at some frequencies are described and the optimum frequencies for a physical simulation using this perticular eutectic alloy, which ensure the maximum electromagnetic force, are determined.
