Preparation and properties of a series of alcohol-based magnetic fluids

D. Bica - L. Vekas

Abstract
Techniques of preparation of alcohol based magnetic fluids employing the double layer surfactant procedure have been described. This stabilization procedure proved to be efficient. The shorter the chain length, the larger was the necessary amount of the secondary surfactant. The rate of change of the effective viscosity, [νeff(t)−νeff(0)]/ (νeff(0)t), turned out to be much less for magnetic fluids with longer chain length alcohols than for those with shorter ones, i. e. the particle migration and structurization processes in a nonuniform magnetic field are significantly inhibited as the alcohol chain length increases.
