Electromagnetic stirring and prevention of arc deflection in DC arc furnace

Abstract
DC arc furnaces show many benefits compared to AC furnaces. In these days, large DC furnaces have been constructed. But the arc deflection becomes a serious problem in large DC furnaces. It causes damages on water cooled panels, uneven melting and reduces productivity. To prevent the arc deflection, the authors newly designed DC conductor route; a combination of horizontal bypass route. and bottom coil. This system was applied to a 130t DC furnace and has been proven to be extremely effective from the view point of power consumption, productivity and maintenance. This system also agitates the steel bath strongly. Fluid flow was analyzed by computer model and the superior effects were confirmed in a 60t DC furnace. Table 1, Figs 10, Refs 2.
