Abstract
Electromagnetic stirring improves metal quality, productivity and reduces costs in con tinuous casting. For each application, the optimum stirrer choice can be made taking into account the steel grade cast, the strand sizes, casting speed, reduction ratio, tem perature. Electromagnetic braking reduces the rate of metal flow in a mould, which in turn reduces breakouts and cracks, as well as surface and subsurface defects in slab cast ing. Electromagnetic stirring in ladle furnaces gives an improved chemical and thermal homogenisation, increased productivity and a superior steel cleanliness. Figs 10, Refs 6.
