Abstract
The paper addresses the mathematical modelling of remelting processes (ESR-VAR), based on the use of electrical power to melt a consumable electrode, either through resistive heating in a slag phase or by means of a vacuum arc. Numerical models have been developed to simulate the continuous growth of the secondary ingot and help optimizing the processing routes. The validation of the models is discussed, as well as the use of high-speed video imaging to visualize the effect of an external magnetic field on the behavior of the VAR electric arc.
