Abstract
Thermal convection in the horizontal layer of ferrofluid in the presence of a vertical magnetic field and subjected to shear flow by an external horizontal pressure gradient is investigated. The Chebyshev tau method is used to find the marginal stability of the flow. The stability analysis is carried out to study the instability in the form of rolls inclined to the direction of shear. The onset of rolls in the direction of shear flow is unaffected. However, the external pressure gradient affects the onset of rolls inclined to the direction of shear flow. Also studied is the effect of the pressure gradient on the distribution of velocity field, temperature field and the magnetic potential at the marginal state. Figs 10, Refs 13.
