Abstract
The flow induced by a single-phase alternating magnetic field (AMF) is studied mainly numerically and by two preliminary experiments of quite different size. For validation, the well known dependence of the characteristic velocity vc on magnetic induction B is reproduced experimentally and in the simulations. It is shown that the flow structure depends drastically on the frequency f of the AMF. An investigation of the change of vc with f results in a quantitative difference of flows in an AMF compared to rotating and travelling magnetic fields. Figs 11, Refs 26.
