Experimental study of the MHD pump assembled with liquid metal electrodes and magnetic system

Abstract
Several MHD pump types are analyzed with the aim to select the one which would satisfy the specific needs of the modern foundry production. The main emphasis is put on studying the previously developed MHD pump with liquid metal electrodes. Based on the results obtained, several modifications to the design of this MHD pump have been done. The proposed design concept makes it possible to improve the P-Q characteristics of the pump, which significantly extends the field of its application. Another advantage of the novel MHD pump model is that it allows one to avoid excessive overheating of the current-carrying electrodes and to increase thus the pump lifetime. Figs 6, Refs 4.
