Abstract
In this paper, a force (ponderomotive force) acting on a non-magnetic body immersed into a magnetic fluid exposed to an external uniform magnetic field has been studied experimentally. We consider the case when the ponderomotive force is caused by the non-uniform demagnetizing (self-magnetic) field of the fluid. Analysis of the results has revealed that the ponderomotive force depends on the displacement of an aluminum cylinder relative to the cavity center and on the external field strength. The ponderomotive force increases with the field strength, reaches its maximum value near the borders of the cavity with a magnetic fluid, where the highest field non-uniformity is provided which is always equal to zero at the cavity center.
