Abstract
The performance of a rod inductor which generates a travelling magnetic field for stirring an aluminum melt in the bath of the reverberatory furnace is studied. It is shown that the inductor of this type can drive smooth stirring of the melt throughout the melting bath, so that admixtures introduced into the melt can be homogeneously and quickly distributed in the liquid metal. To provide the maximum stirring rate, a three-phase low-frequency AC current should be necessarily supplied to the inductor. However, as the numerical experiment demonstrates, there is only a slight decrease in stirring rate when a three-phase current of 50 Hz is passed through the inductor. Figs 10, Refs 18.
