Abstract
Analytical and numerical solutions are obtained for the turbulent flow near a solid wall in tubes of rectangular and circular cross sections, and also for a jet mixing layer; a modification of Prandtl's formula is employed that incorporates the effect of a magnetic field. The results are compared with experiment in order to choose an empirical constant to characterize the effect of the magnetic field on the turbulence. The use of a single constant for all forms of flow gives satisfactory agreement with experiment. Experimental data on the critical state have to be used to get satisfactory agreement with the results for flow in tubes in longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields.
