Special issue: Selected papers of the 13th PAMIR International Conference on Fundamental and Applied MHD, September 16-19, 2024, Carry-le-Rouet, France
PREFACE
The first edition of the PAMIR Conference was organized in 1991, which marked the beginning of the PAMIR adventure. The first conference had benefited from the expertise of Latvian researchers from the Institute of Physics of the University of Latvia (IPUL), who went to Western Europe for the first time after their independence.
The period coincided with the first experiments on fusion reactors, of which the CEA Cadarache was among the world leaders. Thus, the participants at the first PAMIR conference had the opportunity to visit the Tokamak Torre Supra which was at the start of operation. After more than 30 years the organizers decided to return to Cadarache even if it was not possible for administrative reasons to be hosted by the Cadarache castle as it had been earlier.
This edition of the PAMIR conference, the thirteenth one, was dedicated to energy. The participants of the 13th Conference on Fundamental and Applied MHD, some of whom participated in 1991, were able to see the progress made in the field during the visit to I.T.E.R. which was offered to them. This edition of the PAMIR Conference was probably the last one organized by the old PAMIR team toward a new organizing. It is indeed time to think about the new directions of magnetosciences to enrich the discipline and strengthen the conference at the international level.
Agris Gailitis was one of the long-term participants, and he insisted on being with us for PAMIR 2024, despite his very poor health. The PAMIR organizers, I myself, in particular, and all the conference speakers were moved by the show of consideration and friendship shown by his presence at the conference. Everyone was particularly touched by the news of his passing shortly after his return to Latvia.
The organizers would like to thank all the sponsors who have made it possible to maintain the philosophy of the conference by providing access to a wide audience, particularly, from unfavorable countries. This year again the PAMIR Conference was able to benefit from the support of some of those who attended the first conference.
We have included in the appendix the article by Favio Dobran, which is not part of MHD but is of interest to those interested in astrophysics.
