Effects of a magnetic field on the separation of a conducting liquid mixture in a thermal-diffusion column

A. A. Tubin - L. P. Gorbachev

Abstract
A theoretical study is presented of the effects of an external transverse magnetic field on the separation of conducting liquid mixtures in a thermal-diffusion column. Distributions have been derived for the velocity, temperature, and concentration, together with the mass- transport equation for one of the components. It is found that the magnetic field alters the velocity distribution and suppresses parasitic convection; these effects increase the separation factor appreciably.
