Calculation of the velocity induced in the liquid phase of a casting by electromagnetic forces

Abstract
The flow field in an axially symmetric cavity of a casting poured in an electromagnetic crystallizer is found by numerical integration of the general equation of hydrodynamics. The gist of this method, as applied to the particular problem, is to cover the physical plane with a rhombic grid and to replace the actual boundary by a broken line. The solution to the problem takes into account the shape of the liquid meniscus, which is determined separately by the trial-and-error method. On the basis of numerical results for the most typical modes of electromagnetic casting, the distribution of the flow function across a meridional cavern section is then plotted and the total volume flow in the mixing process is also determined. The distribution of the flow function in the liquid phase of a casting is shown here for a current frequency of 2500 Hz. There follows a discussion concerning the effect of the current frequency on the formation of the ingot structure. Magnitnaya Gidrodinamika 11, No. 2, 106-111, 1975 [PDF] (in Russian)
