Generation of large-scale vortical structures by small-scale helical turbulence in a fat layer

S. Yu. Khripchenko

Abstract
A flat layer of a low temperature gallium alloy containing a system of planar vortices with diverse direction superposed by a spatially periodical electrically induced vortical flow has been used as a physical model of small-scale helical turbulence. Thus, there is no general planar circulation, whereas the total helicity of vortical cells in the layer is not zero. Formation of large-scale vortical structures at the excitation of small-scale vortical flows with a certain helicity has been observed in experiment. Figs 7, refs 4.
