Abstract
This text describes the influence of an electromagnetic brake on liquid steel flow in a curved continuous casting mold. Measurements show that the brake decreases sub-meniscus velocity. According to calculations, the large amplitude movement connecting the lower and upper loops inside the caster is suppressed by the application of the brake. The brake is thus contributing to a decrease of the mass or enthalpy exchange between the various fluid layers inside the mold. The brake also leads to a reduction in size of the lower loop and tends to increase the heterogeneity of the inclusion mass flux entrapped by the solidifying shell in the widthwise direction of the slab.
