Abstract
The flow of an electrically conducting liquid in a channel with a backward-facing step in the presence of transverse magnetic field has been investigated. A stable finite-difference numerical method has been employed to solve the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations in a pressure-velocity formulation up to the Reynolds number of 656. It is found that with the increase in electromagnetic force, the separation zone decreases in length for a given flow rate. The effects of the magnetic field on the primary recirculating region attached to the step and the recirculating region opposite to the step wall are analyzed and presented graphically.
