Abstract
Convection in a vertical layer of magnetic fluid heated from one side and exposed to an external uniform oblique magnetic field is studied experimentally. In this case, in addition to the destabilising variable normal component of the magnetic field causing thermomagnetic convection, a tangential component of the magnetic field appears that is perpendicular to the axes of thermomagnetic rolls oriented along the velocity vector of the basic thermogravitational flow. Such a component of the magnetic field remains constant across the layer and thus leads to the reduction of the gradient of the magnetic field magnitude inside the layer and to the subsequent stabilisation of the basic vertical convection flow.
