Abstract
The paper discusses a complex investigation of MHD heat transfer applicable to the TOKAMAK blanket cooling problem. It is a review of recent results obtained in the framework of the experimental program and series of numerical simulations of blanket conditions by the joint team of MPEI-JIHT. Experimental data were sampled using local probe technique for a liquid metal coolant (mercury). Numerical simulations were performed for the same conditions using a RANS technique by the CFD code ANES developed at the Department of Thermal Physics of NRU MPEI. Some specific heat transfer modes caused by combined exposure to a strong magnetic field and thermogravitational forces are found. These modes are characterized by low-frequency temperature fluctuations of significant amplitude which lead to additional thermal stresses. The experimental database of MHD heat transfer was extended due to the performed investigations, and these results could be useful for blanket cooling system developments and optimization.
